Nitrogen

A multipurpose gas for the advanced materials processing industry

Nitrogen is used across numerous applications to help improve quality as well as increase efficiency and yield in advanced materials processing. Its inert nature allows it to be used to protect most molten and heated advanced materials during processing.

We offer compressed nitrogen gas and liquid argon in a variety of purities and concentrations.

Our experienced applications teams across the globe can use their industry and application knowledge to provide you with a compressed or liquid nitrogen supply and technology solution to meet your unique needs.

Nitrogen for Advanced Materials Processing

Nitrogen can be used in a wide range of applications across advanced materials component manufacturing:

  • Inerting atmosphere
  • Powder atomization
  • Gouging
  • Thermal and plasma spraying
  • Heat treating
    • Brazing
    • Annealing
    • Carburizing/Nitriding
    • Neutral Hardening
    • Quenching
  • Sintering
  • 3D printing
  • Shielding gas
  • Cooling
  • Cryo-treating

to provide numerous benefits, such as:

  • Reducing or eliminating surface oxidation
  • Improving product quality
  • Increasing efficiency and yields
  • Decreasing scrap

Ask the Expert

Tom Philips

Applications Engineer

“What nitrogen purity do I need for my heat treatment process?”
That depends on your process. Nitrogen based atmospheres for advanced materials processing have been successfully proven over many years, and due to the enormous range of requirements in furnaces for various materials and surface needs, the use of gas mixtures is now an industry standard. Different products can tolerate differing concentrations of oxidizing components in the furnace atmosphere due to additional reducing or reactive components in the blend. For this reason, the use of on-site generated nitrogen with residual amounts of oxygen can be tolerated. By understanding your oxygen tolerance levels we can help you reduce your costs.  For most materials, although free oxygen is not tolerable, some oxidizing impurities may be permitted. In these cases, the on-site production of high purity nitrogen for the heat treatment of very sensitive materials may be commercially viable.

Supply Options

Air Products can help you determine the most economical supply option for your particular application and geographic location. Industrial gases are typically provided in gaseous and liquid form through a variety of supply systems.

Cylinders & Hard Goods

The traditional solution for low-volume gas supply. Cylinders can be supplied in a full range of sizes, pressures and gas purities for a range of gases and gas mixtures. Search our extensive network of distributors in the U.S. and parts of Canada for your cylinder and hard goods supply needs.

CryoEase® Microbulk Solutions

A convenient and cost-effective solution for larger operations. CryoEase® tanks are available in a range of sizes. The CryoEase® service simplifies your gas supply by eliminating the need to handle cylinders, stock taking and ordering.

Bulk Supply

Delivered by truck and stored on your site either as a liquid in cryogenic tanks or as a gas in high-pressure tubes based on your volume, desired pressure, purity level, flow rate, and operating pattern.

On-site Gas Generation

On-site gas generation helps sustainability-minded customers lower their carbon footprint, boost energy efficiency, increase throughput, enhance end product quality, and improve environmental performance.

On-site Gas Generation

Supply options for nitrogen generators include cryogenic, adsorption, and membrane technologies. These offerings allow us to meet all typical flow, pressure, and purity requirements where on-site nitrogen gas generation is the best supply mode.
